INDIANA(CNN) -- A thyroid drug, called quetiapine, is being used to treat people with schizophrenia who have trouble concentrating, and is considered an antipsychotic. But it may not be the right drug for treating the symptoms of mental illness.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other health authorities are considering an approval for an antipsychotic drug that treats schizophrenia, according to reports on the Internet and other news channels. But an older, more powerful drug may be used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
The FDA has issued several warning letters to people using the antipsychotic drug Seroquel, which is also sometimes called quetiapine. The letters are scheduled to go out this week, in order to alert consumers to the drug.
A review of more than 20,000 patients and the FDA's own review of other antipsychotic drugs indicates that the drug may be the right choice for treating the symptoms of mental illness. The agency said there are no data to support this.
The FDA and other health authorities have been urging patients to take an antipsychotic drug and to not take it until they have been diagnosed with the mental illness.
"It's a big challenge," said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the Public Citizen Health Research Group, a Washington, D. C., group that produces the letters.
"They've been telling us that they don't think we need to be treating this problem for a long time. The problem is we don't have any data showing the safety of quetiapine or of the antipsychotic drug."
A spokeswoman for the FDA said that the drug was approved to treat the "schizophrenia" in 1996, and to treat bipolar disorder in 1997, the last year in which the FDA approved it to treat the symptoms of bipolar disorder.
In addition to schizophrenia, the FDA also approved an antipsychotic drug, called risperidone, that was approved in 1997 for schizophrenia in many parts of the world.
A second antipsychotic drug, fluoxetine, is being used to treat bipolar disorder in several parts of the world.
The agency said it is taking a step forward in its efforts to "implement the current therapeutic standards" in the United States by conducting studies in adults and adolescents. It is also working with other countries to provide an alternative medicine.
The FDA said it will issue an update on the study in March. In August, it will issue a press release.
In the meantime, there's been no new information about the antipsychotic drug.
